Move your community
How to move a Facebook Group to an owned community
Give members a reason to move, run a deliberate overlap period, and carry the relationships, not only the archive.
The short version
- Move for a member-facing reason, not merely because the new software is better for the owner.
- Create a clear destination before announcing the change.
- Use a time-boxed overlap period and personal outreach to preserve relationships.
Give members a reason to move
Members do not care that the new platform has cleaner administration. Explain what becomes easier or more valuable for them: finding resources, following a course, seeing events, avoiding feed algorithms, or talking without using a social account.
Choose one new experience that is only available in the destination and make it useful enough to justify creating a new login.
Prepare the destination before the announcement
- Use a familiar name, description, visual identity, and category language.
- Create a welcome post and a two-minute orientation.
- Move the few evergreen resources people still use instead of copying every old post.
- Invite moderators and highly connected members early so the new space is not empty.
Run a deliberate overlap period
- 1
Announce the reason and timeline
Name the member benefit, opening date, and the date normal activity moves. Repeat the same simple message.
- 2
Host the first important moment in the new space
Use an event, resource, discussion, or program members already value. Do not ask them to move only to read another migration announcement.
- 3
Reach out personally
Contact the people whose participation connects the group. A personal invitation converts better and reveals real login or onboarding problems.
- 4
Close the old loop
After the overlap, pin a final direction post and stop creating new reasons to remain in the old group.
Measure a successful move by relationships retained
Track how many active members join, complete the first useful action, and return. A smaller destination that preserves the people who create value is healthier than a large imported list of inactive accounts.
