Create a course in Course studio
Start a course from the Classroom, set its title, About text, cover, and address, add the first lesson, and find Students and Results.
The short version
- Select New course in the Classroom, and Course studio opens on a draft named Untitled course with an empty Module 1.
- Course details holds the title, About text, and cover, and Course settings on the right holds the course address. Everything saves as you type.
- Members see nothing until you select Publish. Students and Results are in the More course actions menu at the right end of the top bar, and Results needs Pro.
Before you start
- You are the owner or an admin, and your authenticator is set up. A member who opens a studio link is sent to the course page.
- Only the owner can change a course's access or price. Admins can create courses and build their modules and lessons.
- A course holds up to 30 modules and 100 lessons, and each lesson holds up to 40 blocks.
Start a new course
- 1
Open the Classroom
Select Classroom in your community's navigation. Owners and admins see drafts beside published courses, with the tabs All courses, Published, and Drafts.
- 2
Select New course
Use New course at the top of the page, or the dashed New course tile after your courses. In a Classroom with no courses yet, the page says Make your first course and shows the same button.
- 3
Wait for the studio
The page shows Creating your course for a moment, then Course studio opens on the new draft. To come back to a course later, select Edit course on its tile in the Classroom.
How the studio is laid out
The studio has three panes under a top bar. Whatever you select in the outline decides what the other two panes show.
- Outline, on the left: Course details at the top, the Earlier lessons first switch, then each module with its lessons. Add lesson sits under each module, with Add module and Drop files to make lessons at the bottom.
- Canvas, in the middle: the page you are editing, such as Course details, a module, or a lesson.
- Settings, on the right: Course settings, Module settings, or Lesson settings for whatever is selected.
- Top bar: Classroom to go back, the course title with its Draft chip, the save state, the Edit and Preview switch, Publish, and the More course actions menu.
- Preview swaps the canvas for a member's view of the course, and Edit brings the editing canvas back.
Fill in the course details
Select Course details in the outline to open it in the canvas. Changes save as you type, and the top bar shows Saving… and then Saved.
- 1
Name the course
Select the title Untitled course at the top of the canvas and replace it with yours, up to 200 characters. Press Enter to leave the field, and the top bar picks up the new name.
- 2
Write the About text
About holds up to 2,000 characters and shows on the course page and the Classroom card. The field suggests a sentence or two about what someone gets from the course.
- 3
Pick a cover style
Under Cover, choose Accent, Violet, Teal, or Ink. Show the title on the cover prints the course title on the art, and the card beside the choices is a live preview of the Classroom card.
- 4
Or upload an image
Select Upload an image and choose a JPG, PNG, or WebP file up to 10 MB, ideally 1600 × 900 or larger. The style stays on the card until the upload finishes. Replace swaps the image, and Remove goes back to the last style you picked.
- 5
Set the course address
In Course settings on the right, Course address follows /classroom/. A new course gets a generated address that starts with course-, and renaming the course leaves the address as it is. Type your own with lowercase letters, numbers, and dashes, up to 60 characters. It saves after a short pause, and after you publish, old links still open the course.
Add the first lesson
While the course has no lessons, Course details ends with a box titled Next, the first lesson. Any of these adds a lesson to Module 1.
- From Course details: select Add lesson in the Next, the first lesson box. Lockers makes a video lesson named Lesson 1 and opens it.
- From the outline: select Add lesson under Module 1, choose Video lesson or Text lesson, type a title, and press Enter. Enter adds the lesson and opens it, and Esc cancels.
- From files: drag videos, audio files, or documents onto the outline, or select Choose files under Drop files to make lessons. Each file becomes one lesson, titled from its file name.
What members see before you publish
A new course stays a draft, and members do not see drafts in the Classroom. You still see it there with a Draft chip under All courses and Drafts, and a note above your courses says members only see the published ones.
When the course is ready, select Publish in the top bar. A short check opens with anything still missing, such as a lesson with no content, and a link to fix each item. Access chosen stays missing until you open Change access in Course settings.
After the first publish, Lockers can offer to post about the course in the feed, and Not now posts nothing. From then on, your edits wait until you select Publish changes, and members keep seeing the published version.
Find Students and Results
Open the More course actions menu, the three-dot button at the right end of the top bar. Students and Results in that menu open Admin pages for this course.
Students lists the course's learners with their access source and includes Grant course access. Results appears on Pro and opens the course report, with learner totals, a lesson funnel, quiz results, and Export progress CSV.
The same menu holds Duplicate course and Delete course. Unpublish appears once the course is published, and Discard changes appears when a published course has edits waiting.
If it does not work
- New course is missing: you are signed in without an owner or admin role. Only the owner and admins see New course in the Classroom.
- Couldn't create the course: select Try again. If the page offers Confirm it's you, select it and complete the check with your authenticator.
- This course address is already in use: another course in this community has that address or used it before. Choose a different address.
- A message that an address is part of the app: new, studio, finish, api, and admin belong to Lockers pages. Choose another address.
- Couldn't save: select Retry in the top bar. The note above the canvas says what went wrong.
- The upload took too long. Try a smaller image.: choose a smaller cover file. Cover images can be up to 10 MB.
- Getting this course ready: an older course is moving into Course studio the first time it opens. Members can keep learning while this runs.
