Use Lockers
Add, arrange, and move lessons and modules
Build a course outline in Course studio: add lessons and modules, rename and reorder them, delete what you no longer need, and turn a batch of files into lessons.
The short version
- The outline on the left of Course studio holds every module and lesson. Use Add lesson under a module and Add module at the bottom, then drag rows or use Move up, Move down, and Move to from a row's three-dot menu to set the order.
- Drop video, MP3, PDF, and document files on the outline to make one lesson per file, titled from the file names. Dropped videos count against your stored video minutes like any lesson video.
- Deleting a lesson keeps each member's progress and notes, and reordering keeps every lesson link working because the number at the end of a lesson's address stays with it. A course holds up to 30 modules and 100 lessons on Free and Pro.
Before you start
- You are the owner or an admin, and your authenticator is set up.
- Open Classroom and select Edit course on the course. Course studio opens with the outline on the left.
- On a phone, the studio shows one pane at a time. Choose Outline in the control at the top.
- The studio is in Edit mode. In Preview, the outline only opens lessons the way a member would see them.
Add a lesson
- 1
Select Add lesson
Every module ends with Add lesson. The new lesson goes at the end of that module, and you can move it afterward.
- 2
Choose the type
Pick Video lesson or Text lesson. Video lesson is selected when the field opens.
- 3
Name it
Type the title and press Enter. The lesson opens on the canvas so you can add its content. To cancel, press Esc or click away while the field is still empty.
Add and rename modules
Select Add module at the bottom of the outline. The new module goes at the end with the name Module and its number, and it opens on the canvas so you can type a real title and a description. The count beside the button shows how many of the 30 modules the course uses.
To rename a lesson or a module in the outline, double-click its title, or open the row's three-dot menu and select Rename. Press Enter to save, or press Esc to keep the old title. You can also edit the title at the top of the canvas while the lesson or module is selected.
Change the order
Drag a row by its handle, the six dots at its start. While you drag, a line marks where the row will drop, and Esc cancels the move. The outline scrolls when you drag near its top or bottom edge.
A lesson can move within its module or into another one, and with a mouse you can also drag a lesson from anywhere on its row. A module moves from its handle and takes its lessons with it. Members follow the outline order, and Complete and continue opens the next lesson in it.
The three-dot menu on each row does the same job from a keyboard or a touch screen, where the menu button always shows.
- 1
Move one place
Select Move up or Move down. A lesson at the top of its module moves to the end of the module above, and a lesson at the bottom moves to the start of the module below.
- 2
Move to another module
Under Move to, select a module. The lesson goes to the end of that module. The module it sits in now is marked here now.
- 3
Move a module
A module's menu has Move up and Move down. Drag its handle when you want to move it several places at once.
When members see the new order
Members see nothing of a draft course until its first Publish, so arrange it as often as you like.
On a published course, each add, rename, move, and delete is saved as a change that members do not see until you select Publish changes. Until then, new lessons and modules carry a New tag and changed ones show a dot. Discard changes in the top bar's three-dot menu returns the studio to the course members see now.
Each lesson gets a number when you add it, and its address ends in that number. Moving the lesson, even into another module, keeps the number, so a link in a post or an email still opens the same lesson. The position members see, in the form Lesson 5 of 9 in the player, follows the outline and changes when you publish. Numbers count up as you add lessons, so a new lesson never takes a deleted lesson's number.
Delete a lesson or module
Deleting a module deletes every lesson in it, so move any lesson you want to keep into another module first. On a published course, deleted items stay visible to members until you publish your changes. Before then, Discard changes brings them back, and it also drops every other change you have not published.
- 1
Open the delete action
In the row's three-dot menu, select Delete lesson or Delete module. A selected module's settings also offer Delete module and its lessons.
- 2
Confirm
The dialog names the lesson or module and says what leaves the course. Select Delete lesson or Delete module to go ahead, or Keep it to stop.
Turn a batch of files into lessons
Drop files on the outline to make one lesson per file. Files held over a module go to the end of that module, which shows Add here while you hold them. Files dropped elsewhere on the outline, or picked with Choose files in the Drop files to make lessons box, go to the last module.
Lessons are added in file-name order, and numbers are read as numbers, so a file starting with 2 comes before one starting with 10.
- Videos in MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI, MPEG, OGV, or M4V format become video lessons with the file as the lesson's video. A lesson video can run up to 120 minutes and be up to 5 GB.
- PDF files become text lessons that show the PDF in a viewer.
- MP3 files become text lessons with an audio player.
- Text, CSV, ZIP, Word (.docx), Excel (.xlsx), PowerPoint (.pptx), and image files (JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, AVIF) become text lessons with the file attached for members to download.
- Files other than videos can be up to 16 MB. Any other type, such as .doc, .wav, or .m4a, is left out and shows This file type can't be a lesson.
How lesson titles are cleaned up
Lockers titles each lesson from its file name. It removes the extension and any leading lesson number such as 04_, and it drops the word final and version tags such as v2. Underscores and hyphens become spaces. Capital letters stay as you typed them, so 04_the-cost-floor_FINAL.mp4 becomes the cost floor.
A number at the start of a file name is always treated as numbering, so 10 ways to price.mp4 becomes ways to price. A name with nothing left after the cleanup becomes Untitled lesson. Rename those lessons in the outline or on the canvas.
Follow the upload tray
The Uploads tray at the bottom of the outline lists every file with its lesson title above the original file name. The lessons appear in the outline right away and fill in as their files finish. Two files upload at a time. Each row shows Waiting, a percentage with the time left, or Processing, and then the video's length, or Done for other files.
Keep the tab open until the tray finishes. You can keep editing in the meantime, and the browser asks before you leave while uploads are running. Once everything is done, Clear the list empties the tray.
- A row that fails says Not added with the reason. Retry appears when sending the file again can help, and Remove takes the row out of the tray.
- If an upload fails or you cancel it after its lesson was made, the lesson stays in the outline without the file. Add the file inside the lesson, or delete the lesson.
Course size limits
A course holds up to 30 modules and 100 lessons on Free and Pro. The count beside Add module shows how many modules you have used, and the button is switched off at 30. At 100 lessons, each module's Add lesson turns into the count 100 of 100 lessons, and Choose files is switched off.
A drop that would take the course past 100 lessons shows A course can have up to 100 lessons in the tray. Delete lessons you no longer need, or split the material into a second course.
If it does not work
- The outline has no handles, menus, or Add lesson: the studio is in Preview. Select Edit in the top bar.
- This course has an operation in progress. Wait for it to finish.: a publish or a copy of the course is still running. Try again once it ends.
- This content changed in another tab. Review the saved version before retrying.: the outline changed somewhere else. Check the order the outline now shows, then move the row again.
- A course can have up to 30 modules.: delete a module you no longer need, after moving any lessons you want to keep.
- This file type can't be a lesson.: save the file as one of the types listed above, such as PDF or MP4, and drop it again.
- Files other than videos can be up to 16 MB.: compress or split the file before you drop it.
- A video needs more minutes of video storage than you have left: remove videos you no longer use, or move the Locker to Pro.
- Members still see a deleted lesson or the old order: the course has changes you have not published yet. Select Publish changes.
- A lesson has no video or file after a batch: its upload failed or was canceled. Add the file inside the lesson, or delete the lesson.
