Best community platforms, compared on price and fit
The right community platform depends on whether you need conversation, courses, a store, or fan memberships. Lockers, Skool, Circle, Mighty Networks, Podia, Kajabi, and Patreon each fit a different job.
Match the platform to the job
- A free plan you keep, with courses and a community: Lockers.
- A paid group with published fee rules and a short list of tools: Skool.
- Workflows, more admin seats, and webhooks on a higher plan: Circle.
- A branded mobile app at the top of the price list: Mighty Pro or Circle Plus, both with custom pricing.
- Courses, downloads, coaching, events, and a website: Podia.
- Email, landing pages, funnels, and courses in one suite: Kajabi.
- Fans paying for posts, perks, and updates: Patreon.
Lockers
Lockers Free includes unlimited members and unlimited courses, with no card. Pro is $49 a month or $470 a year per Locker. Pro adds your own domain, quizzes, written assignments, certificates, an AI tutor, and the API. Members use Lockers in a mobile browser and can add it to their home screen.
Selling is available after the Locker owner connects a Stripe account and completes payment setup. On course sales, the platform fee is 5% on Free and 1% on Pro. Paid membership requires Pro, includes every course, and the platform fee is 1% on each payment. Payment processing costs extra. We calculate the platform fee after discounts and before tax. When a payment is refunded, we return the proportional platform fee; payment-provider fees follow the provider’s rules.
Skool
Skool fits a group that charges for access and wants a short list of tools. Hobby is $9 a month with a 10% transaction fee, and Pro is $99 a month with a 2.9% transaction fee. The pricing page also lists affiliates and two months free on yearly billing.
The payments FAQ names a Hobby plan at 10% plus $0.30, and a Pro plan at 2.9% plus $0.30 up to $899, and 3.9% plus $0.30 above $900. It says Skool is the merchant of record and that payment processing happens on Skool's side. The same FAQ describes Growth Boost, a 30% commission on customers Skool brings in. It is on by default and can be turned off.
The payment terms say Skool has two plans, Hobby and Pro, and both are recurring subscriptions after a 14-day free trial.
Circle
Circle fits communities that want workflows, a larger admin allowance, and, on Circle Plus, a branded mobile app. On annual billing, Professional is $89 a month, Business is $199, and Scale is $419. Fees are 2%, 1%, and 1%. Every plan lists unlimited members, courses, a custom domain, and mobile apps. Circle lists a 14-day trial with no card, a 30-day money-back guarantee, and no free plan.
Mighty Networks
Mighty Networks fits communities that want courses and events, and Mighty Pro is the branded-app offer. Launch is $79 a month and $950 for the year. Mighty shows $179 for Scale and $354 for Growth, and Mighty Pro has no public price. Members are listed as unlimited, and host and moderator caps rise by plan.
The transaction fee is 5% on Explore, 2% on Launch, 1% on Scale, and 0.5% on Growth. A Growth trial is listed at 5%. Stripe's processing fee is separate.
Mighty offers a 14-day trial of Growth with no card. If that trial lapses, the network moves to a free plan with one host, one moderator, unlimited members, and 10 GB of storage.
Podia
Podia fits people selling courses, downloads, coaching, and events from one site, with email and a website. On yearly billing, Mover is $42 a month ($504 billed annually) with a 5% Podia fee. Shaker is $84 a month ($1,008 billed annually) with no Podia fee. Earthquaker is $150 a month ($1,800 billed annually) with no Podia fee.
Every plan lists community, online courses, digital downloads, coaching, events, a website, and a custom domain. Mover lists 50 products and Shaker lists 150. Podia offers a 14-day trial with no card. Its FAQ says a refund request has to arrive within 72 hours of the latest payment, and annual plans are not partially refunded.
Kajabi
Kajabi fits an online business that wants email, landing pages, funnels, and courses together. Basic is $143 a month when billed yearly, or $179 paid monthly. Growth is $199 a month when billed yearly, or $249 paid monthly. Pro is $399 a month when billed yearly, or $499 paid monthly.
Kajabi lists 5 products and 2,500 contacts on Basic, 50 products and 25,000 contacts on Growth, and unlimited products with 100,000 contacts on Pro. Communities are 1 on Basic, 1 on Growth, and 3 on Pro.
Kajabi's pricing FAQ says it does not take a revenue share. Kajabi Payments lists US card rates of 2.9% plus $0.30 on Basic, 2.8% plus $0.30 on Growth, and 2.7% plus $0.30 on Pro. It offers a free trial, and every plan lists a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Patreon
Patreon fits creators whose fans pay for posts, perks, and updates. The pricing page says Patreon is free to start and that you pay when you earn. It lists 10% of the income you earn on Patreon, plus payment processing, currency conversion, and payout fees.
Patreon's help article says that 10% plan applies to creator pages published after August 4, 2025. Pages published on or before that date keep their existing platform pricing. The pricing page also lists membership tiers, email newsletters, native video and livestreaming, chats, comments, and discovery. It says Patreon handles payments and taxes. It does not list a course builder.
